A Decent Proposal

Engagements are fun. And I don't mean just for the couple, but for everyone around them. It's an honour to be one of the first ones to know that it is happening, and breaking the news before it's been made "official" is just as exciting.

I have written on here before about a fun wedding but now I think it will be fun to describe in words the best proposal idea ever. And this one doesn't involve planes, movie theatres, or lip dubs so don't worry fellas.

Imagine if you will that you're on a beach. It doesn't really matter what beach, as long as what you step on can be classified as some form of sand (Scarborough bluffs are fine, ignore what haters say!). It's a full moon, the stars are out and the weather cool but not cold enough to shiver.

You build a fire. You laugh and smile and set your camera to flash because even with a fire it's still too dark without it.

And then, you pull out the snacks...

What is this? Her favourite: Ringos. You open the bag, secretly, and carefully place the ring into the bag ensuring that your hand has it steady. And then...

You offer her some, she dips her hand in the bag and then boom - her hand comes out with a fistful of ringos and a finger-full of metal and diamond. Congratulations!

You're probably thinking at what point do you pop the question, and that is entirely up to you.

I know I've set the bar pretty high for this one, so don't worry if you don't think you can pull it off well. Do what best represents you. The community will still be there to support you, and I think that's one of the most exciting thing about engagements. Joshua Harris puts an emphasis on community within a wedding, and I think the same can be said for engagements. They're a window into something promising, hopeful.

Well, now is a good a time as any to plug my new upcoming book, ENGAGEMENT. It's about taking what feels like purgatory to some for a season, and turning it into a purgaparty. Pre-orders available now.
